Women's Health Q&A

Why do I need annual women’s health exams?

Many women only visit Connect Integrative Medicine when a problem arises. While these visits are essential for dealing with an immediate health concern, annual women’s health exams focus on preventive health care.

Like other chronic health conditions, many problems that develop in a woman’s reproductive tract develop for years before causing symptoms. By the time you feel something is wrong, the condition has reached an advanced stage.

Yearly well-woman exams allow your provider to find signs of problems early when they can still offer treatment that prevents severe disease.

When should women’s health care begin?

Teens benefit from scheduling their first well-woman exam around age 13-15. Their first visit doesn’t usually include a pelvic exam. Instead, they get a general physical and have the chance to learn or ask questions about their menstrual cycles, irregular periods, and sexuality.

Women should have a complete pelvic exam and Pap smear when they become sexually active or at 21. Then they should have yearly well-woman visits and routine Pap smears every 3-5 years.

What happens during my women’s health exam?

Connect Integrative Medicine offers integrative care that combines modern medicine with alternative therapies. They always take the time to explain your condition and treatment options so you can make informed decisions about your health.

Your women’s health visit may include reviewing your personal/family medical history, vitals, and your current health concerns. Connect Integrative Medicine, also offers a full range of services, including:

  • Pelvic exam
  • Breast exam
  • Pap smear
  • Birth control consultations
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing
  • Dietary counseling
  • Nutraceuticals
  • Menopause management
  • Weight loss management
  • Chronic disease management

Your provider assesses your risk for reproductive diseases and chronic health conditions. They actively screen for conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and breast and cervical cancer.

They also remind you when it’s time for other screenings based on the current guidelines. For example, they may refer you to specialists to screen for osteoporosis or colon cancer.
